The 14th Annual Meeting took place on 7 October 2005, in Riga, Latvia. Fifty-four delegates from 25 countries participated in the meeting to assess the work of the past year, plan future activities and decide issues of policy. The meeting was opened by the Minister of Health of Latvia, followed by the WHO Representatives from Latvia and Copenhagen. The meeting consisted of a business general assembly and a professional session compromising a section on networking and data exchange across borders and interactive presentations from France and Latvia about the development of the pharmacy practice in their respective countries. During the business part of the meeting, the severe financial difficulties of the Forum were discussed and the Forum gave mandate to the Executive Committee to explore and examine organizational and structural solutions to maintain a strong and effective administration of EuroPharm Forum.
Two separate events were arranged in combination with the general assembly and both held in the Radisson SAS Daugava Hotel in Riga. The Conference on Patient Safety: how do pharmacist managed services contribute to patient safety and respond to people's needs, brought together 93 participants to discuss problems and solutions around patient safety with a focus on the pharmacists' role. The Hands-on Training Seminar was attended by 49 participants who had the opportunity to practice project management by learning to use the new Forum CD-ROM for professional management.
During the events, the EuroPharm Best Practice Award was presented for the second time, and the 2005 award went to Dr Marie Zajícová, Czech Republic. The award was given in recognition of the initiative by the Czech Chamber to help elderly patients to manage their medication use. The activity was selected by an official Jury Panel to be the best practice programme of the year, among the posters presented at the EuroPharm Conference on 8 October 2005. The EuroPharm Best Practice Award has been established to acknowledge a pharmacist, or national pharmaceutical association, for taking responsibility and committing themselves to developing and establishing a new practice that is effective and relevant to patients and the public.
